Heart and Cerebrovascular Accidents

Every day, lots of people in Puerto Rico survive a heart attack or stroke, but do not have the money to cover their treatment. Triple-S Vida’s Heart and Stroke Policy has been specially designed to meet these circumstances. This policy covers medical and hospitalization expenses associated with the definitive treatment of heart disease, a heart attack or a stroke.

The Heart and Stroke Policy covers these expenses, among others:

  • Hospitalization
  • Blood, plasma, and platelets
  • Transportation and lodging for the insured
  • Transportation and lodging for an accompanying family member
  • Surgery
  • Electrocardiogram
  • Anesthesia
  • Heart transplant
  • Head physician visits during hospitalization
  • Medical equipment for home use
  • Ambulance
  • Drugs
  • Nursing services
  • Physiotherapy
  • Oxygen

This coverage is available to people aged between 0 and 70 years. There is a premium for people under 65 and another for people over 65 to 70 years. The policy has two benefit levels, identified as A and B. The difference is in the amounts payable by the various benefits and the corresponding premium. Cover A has twice the benefit limit as cover B. The basic policy has a waiting period of 30 days from the effective date. During this period, no benefits are payable for conditions covered by the policy. If a loss that would be covered under the policy occurs during this period, the policyholder has the option to request the cancellation of the policy and reimbursement of premiums paid.

Heart policy supplements

Intensive care

It provides a benefit per calendar day of hospitalization in an intensive care unit. If you are hospitalized in a government hospital, the benefit is limited to the actual charges to the limit of the purchased benefit. The benefit is issued in units of $100, $200, and $300. Upon reaching the age of 65, the benefit is reduced by half. This supplement, like the policy, has a waiting period of 30 days.

First cancer diagnosis

One lump sum is paid when the first diagnosis of internal cancer or malignant melanoma is made. The benefit is issued with a minimum of $1,000 and a maximum of $5,000, in $500 increments. This supplement, like the policy, has a waiting period of 30 days.

First heart attack and heart surgery

One lump sum is paid when a heart attack is diagnosed for the first time or when major heart surgery is performed for the first time. The benefit is issued with a minimum of $1,000 and a maximum of $5,000, in $500 increments. The first benefit of major surgery is 20% of the benefit of first heart attack. This supplement has a waiting period of 60 days.
